Frequently Asked Questions
What is thin brick veneer?
Thin brick veneer is a lightweight alternative to full-thickness masonry. Both PortStone and Patriot Pavers are made from high-strength concrete that replicate the appearance of traditional brick while being easier to install and more versatile for interior and exterior applications.
How thick are the PortStone brick veneer panels?
PortStone is approximately ¼ inch thick, making them ideal for renovations, remodels, or any project where full-thickness brick would be too heavy or impractical.
Does Patriot Pavers also come in panels?
No, Patriot Pavers are single bricks approximately ½” thick.
Where can I install thin brick veneer?
You can install PortStone and Patriot Pavers on:
-
- Interior floors: kitchens, entryways, sunrooms, actually any room in the house.
- Walls: accent walls, fireplaces, backsplashes
- Exterior surfaces: patios, porches, walkways, and facades
Always follow manufacturer recommendations for substrates and surface preparation. We do not recommend Patriot Pavers for use on exterior surfaces north of the Mason Dixon line.
What patterns and colors are available?
PortStone offers a wide variety of pre-assembled patterns like herringbone, running bond, and basketweave, along with standard and premium colors to suit your style. PortStone also features classic modular brick styles.
Can I install this myself or should I hire a professional?
Both products are designed to be DIY-friendly, especially for those with experience working with tile. However, for larger or more complex installations—especially exterior or vertical applications—hiring a professional installer is recommended.
How are the panels installed?
Installation is similar to ceramic tile:
- Use a polymer-modified thin-set mortar
- Apply using a ¼" x ¼" square-notch trowel (or 1/2" X ½" for Patriot Pavers)
- Press panels into the mortar, allow 24 hours to cure
- Grout with sanded grout suitable for ½" joints
- Seal with SC-25 Paver Seal and finish with Super Wax or Matte Finish
Do I need to seal the brick?
Yes. While PortStone and Patriot Pavers often ship pre-sealed, a final coat of sealer is recommended after grouting. For exterior projects, always use a non-slip additive to improve safety when wet. We carry SuperGrip for this purpose.
How do I maintain thin brick veneer floors?
- Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner (avoid vinegar or bleach)
- Use microfiber mops or rayon applicators to avoid lint
- Reapply floor finish every 2 years or as needed for maximum protection
- Use furniture pads and natural rubber-backed rugs to protect the surface - SEE THE NOTICE REGARDING SYNTHETIC RUG BACKINGS AND PADS ON OUR INSTALLATION PAGES.
How much does thin brick veneer weigh?
PortStone weighs about 3 lbs per square foot, and Patriot Pavers weigh approximately 4.5 lbs per square foot which makes them suitable for use on both floors and walls without requiring structural reinforcement.
Can I order samples?
Yes! Both PortStone and Patriot Pavers strongly recommend ordering samples before placing a full order to ensure color and texture match your project’s needs.
Is there a warranty?
Yes. Products are covered by a one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects. Please inspect all materials before installation—installing defective product voids the warranty.
